August Assured

We've had a real hot and dry summer and we had a couple of fires start up around us that really made the valley look smoky! You would of thought we were living in downtown California! There was a fire up Millville Canyon as well as one in Plymouth, ID.

A dear friend of Garrett's (Dave Hinton) passed away in a tragic boating accident at Lake Powell. We had the "Boys" here a couple of times for get-togethers to help with the grieving and healing. What a strength his dear wife, Lexi, is to all of us. Her knowledge of the temple sealing has really given her the strength to make it through this terrible time. Dave's funeral was probably one of the best I've ever been too. The spirit was felt so strong as Dave's wife, Lexi, spoke about her best friend and eternal companion. She even shared how his death happened and the feelings she had about it. There wasn't a dry eye in the room. We love you Dave and will hold a special place in our hearts for your wit and wisdom. Till we meet again--------

We have had a great garden going with beans, corn, cucumbers, onions, tomatoes, zucchini, yellow and spaghetti squash, cantaloupe, honeydew, carrots and pumpkins. Enough of a bounty that we have been able to share with others, which we enjoy doing. However we found a visitor that has found our garden and he's just been helping himself. Tag, our dog, gives us the heads up with his constant barking. So with that clue Dale was able to sneak up and get a great picture of our intruder.

Dale was in heaven! He didn't mind a bit that this guy was munching away at our tomatoes, honeydew and pumpkins! Well, thanks to him I didn't have enough tomatoes to make much fresh salsa with homegrown tomatoes this year! I hope he finds a new eating station soon!

My sister, Tanya, was over the Petersen Reunion this year and she didn't let us down. We went to Lava Hot Springs for the day. Dale and I had access to Andrew's motorhome so we thought it would be fun to take it for a spin to Lava and stay the night before the reunion. We had my brother, Danny, and his wife, Terry, join us.

We got the motorhome all loaded up and stopped in Franklin, ID to get a bite to eat at LaTienda (and no we didn't buy any lottery tickets) before taking the trek. What an adventure! After we ate we went out to the motorhome and there was a guy  looking at the tire on it. He said, "Is that your RV? It looks like you've got a low tire, I've got a air compressor if you want I can fill it up for you."
Dale and Danny looked at the tire and it did need air, so Dale ran in a bought an air gauge at the gas station and they put air in the tire. Then they decided to check the other tires and found out that one of the rear inside tires had no air! When they went to put air in the tire their was just air blowing out. The valve stem extender had a tear in it and after looking they realized that the stem would need to be replaced. So our "Three Nephites"  as we called them, had done what they could and we called Jack's Tire to send a guy out to see if we could get a new valve stem put on the tire. Terry and I thought about checking out downtown Franklin during the wait but decided it was more fun hearing and seeing Dale and Danny trying to fix the problem. Jack's Tire had their guy come and he fixed the valve stem and then went to put air in the tire and there was a loud bang! The tire had burst!! They think that the tire had been driven on for quite some time with no air in it and the tire wall was worn thin. We were very blessed that our "Three Nephites" had noticed the low tire. Otherwise, we may have had a blow-out on the freeway and it may have made the motorhome tip to the side! (That's what the guy from Jack's Tire said)
We canceled our camping spot at Lava and hobbled back to the house. Terry and I were willing to stay in the motorhome, but the guys said they'd prefer their beds. So we unloaded and slept in our beds. (Party poopers, huh)

Danny and Terry were good sports and decided to give us another try by riding with us in our car to Lava. We made it there just fine without any problems. We had lunch in the park and some of the group went swimming in the pool and some went tubing down the river. We opted to tube down the river. Matt, Amie and their kids were all we had at the reunion from our family. We all had fun visiting and running the river.

We were heading out and my nephew, Jonathon, was behind us in his truck and stopped us and said that it looked like our passenger back tire was low on the car!!! Low and behold it was! We found a gas station and got air in the tire. Wow! This was the Reunion to Remember. Danny and Terry may decided to drive us next time! It's a good thing we have people looking out for us :)

On a sweeter note---I had the opportunity of working with 1,375 lbs. of chocolate chips this month! We took orders for them in our ward and I got to help divide and distribute them. I don't think I've done a service that smelled so good!!! I realized women love their chocolate :)

Danica started out her soccer season with a bang! She's starting and playing most the game. They've won 3, and tied one in OT this month. She did get a real bad cold that she had to get a prescription to recover from, but she's a tough cookie and only set out on a scrimmage. Looks like they may be going to Nationals again if they can keep winning.

Jaxson and Kennlyn started school. Jaxson is in 2nd grade and Kennlyn is starting Pre-school. They both enjoy school and I'm sure Amie enjoys a little one on one time with Langston.

Nate finished up his month working at the Denver Veteran's Hospital in their Podiatry Program. Kim flew out to meet him and then they drove back to Oakland together. I'm sure Nate enjoyed the company and the help with driving.
Before heading home they hooked up with some friends, Brody and Kiley Hatch,  and did some camping and climbing in the Vedauwoo area. They love all Colorado has to offer.
We were able to catch up with them in Salt Lake on their way through and we went to dinner to celebrate Nate's birthday. The Mallory's joined us as well. It was good to get in a little visit. Time well spent. We love our Oaklanders.

They made it back to Oakland and got back into the daily grind with school and work. Nate did find time to do more hiking though. He hooked up with some podiatry students and went to Yosemite to climb Matthes Crest and then hiked Mount Diablo in Oakland. Kim's still teaching some exercise classes and had photographed a few weddings. They know busy.

Garrett and Zandra have been getting their shots and their paperwork done to go to Ghana next month. Garrett's going through USU's Business College and will be helping with micro loans to help the people get a start in business. Zandra is going along for company and to help in the school. Garrett made sure he got in one last motorcycle ride and Moab biking trip before he leaves the country.

Andrew's loving his new office view behind the controls of a helicopter. He and Lindsay are getting in the sun and sights as they can and the kids are missing Grandpa and Grandma I'm sure!

I do know that you can be assured that we are missing them!
