Mountain Magic in May

Where our home away from home is above Heber City, UT as we serve our mission and we have a niece living in Heber City, we were invited to attend the baptism of Sunny Sabey, the youngest child of Christian and Erin Sabey. Erin is my brother, Danny's daughter. Christian is also the bishop of their ward, so the Sabey's were the whole program. It was nice to see Bishop Sabey was presiding over the baptism. He used one of his counselors to conduct the baptism, and Minnie Sabey (the oldest child) was the pianist, Grandpa Sabey (Christian's dad) lead the music, Grandma Petersen (Erin's mom, Terry) gave the opening prayer, and Erin gave a talk on baptism. Then, Bishop Sabey baptized Sunny while Vance Sabey (their only son), and Hope (their second daughter) acted as witnesses. Grandpa Petersen (Erin's dad, Danny) stood in the circle to help confirm the Holy Ghost upon Sunny after she was baptized and then Grandma Sabey (Christian's mom) gave the closing prayer. Both Hope and Sunny have Down's Syndrome, and it was so touching to watch the joy that was on their faces after Sunny was baptized. It got a bit tricky, because Sunny got a little hesitant to go into the water, but with coaching from her dad and Hope who was a witness, she decided to go ahead with it. After the baptistm, Sunny said she wanted to do that again with a big smile. The spirit was strongly felt as they were conferring the Holy Ghost upon Sunny. What a blessing it was for all who attended and felt that special spirit. Thanks Christian and Erin for letting us be a part of this special day for Sunny. The Sabey's are a beautiful example of true love for others and of the Savior.

Elder Hansen and I were able to attend the temple dedication for the Lindon, UT Temple with our HVC Branch by watching it via broadcast at the church building we attend. At the beginning of the dedication after the opening prayer, Elder Hansen felt something on his neck, He brushed at it and a small tick was on his hand!! That was quite a surprise to see!!
There were two youth speakers that talked as part of the program and they gave wonderful talks about temples, Christ and covenants. They really brought in the Spirit and set the tone for the rest of the meeting. It was all nice. Pres. Henry B. Eyring dedicated the temple. We were gald to be able to see this happen. Elder Hansen and I were each given a white handkerchief with the Lindon Temple embroidered on it, as a Thank You from Sis. Gann, one of the missionaries that we have befriended and come to love. I helped her feel at ease the first day of climbing and we hit it off. She's a very humble and sweet sister.
We used those hankies to do the Hosannah Shout in the dedication.

We also had the opportunity to attend the Orem Temple with some of the missionaries to do an endowment session this month. All of the HVC missionaries were attending one of three temples for part of our first mission conference. We all met at the Harman Building on the Brigham Young University Campus after for lunch and then we heard Sis. Emily Belle Freeman, the General President of the Young Women speak as well as Elder David L. Smith, who is the Area Seventy over our area,
It was a nice lunch with some powerful speakers. I enjoy hearing Sis. Freeman talk, she helped me in my calling when I was called to teach the Old Testament for our ward Gospel Doctrine class. She and David Butler did a podcast called "Don't Miss This" that went along with the Churches Come Follow Me curriculum. I was able to go shake her hand and thank her all she did to help me and visit for a bit. I never got a picture with her though. Oh well, that's life. It was a wonderful day.

We got done with our training, passed our knot tying and the written exam with CLAS Ropes and got our district assignments. Then we had a potluck dinner to celebrate. We ended up in District 3 with Elder & Sis. Moss as our District Leaders. We'll be working on Challenge Courses 4 & 6. CC4 is a new High adventure Course and CC6 is a Climbing Wall. It should be an adventure!

We were able to go on some "buggy" rides and got in some Pickleball with some of the missionaries. For most of the Elders and Sisters being around 60+ yrs. old. We know how to enjoy the mountain trails and get some court time fun in as well.
The leaves are starting to come out on the trees and it's greening up the mountain. So pretty!! We've seen quite a few deer, some potguts (but not many in our area, thank goodness), a few moose (one which came through the back of one of the courses), and have heard of cougar and black bear sightings.

We went to Sis. Moss's sisters' beautiful cabin in the Timber Lake area that's by HVC for a dinner and games as a District as well. There isn't much down time and if there is we still find time to enjoy each other's company.

The HVC always does an Open House in the Spring and the Fall. It's for and all that want to come and check out what the Camp has to offer. This was our first time to work with the public.
The Mallory's were in the area due to a soccer game, so they stopped by to check it out. I got to send them all but Matt down the zip-line. They checked out the lake, and the Tomahawk throw as well as the camp itself. I think they all had a good time.

We woke up after Mother's Day around 8 inches from a cold front that came through Sunday night into Mon. morning. The temperatures dropped for a few days. We were wishing he hadn't left our real warm coats, hats, and pants home thinking we were done with the cold temperatures for a while. Our bad!! They called off all activities on the courses due to the snow, so we had a Snow Day and played games for a while after our devotional.

After the snow had stopped and started melting, it looked a lot greener!!

We were able to have some of the Sister Missionaries that are serving at Temple Square come and enjoy our courses. They were adorable. So full of energy and willing to give it all a try. Our first practice with the public.

I was at the end of the zip-line helping them off and on their way to more fun

We were able to get away for our P-Day to get the windshield on the truck replaced. While heading back home, we had another truck flip a rock at the car and make a crack in the windshield!! our luck isn't very good going through the canyons!! We got the trucks windshield fixed at the shop and Dale did a temporary fix on the cars windshield that we hope holds for a while. We got the wash done, and did some yard work before heading back. We stopped in at Garrett and Zandra's to wish Luke an early Happy Birthday and were able to visit with them some before heading back to the mountain.
We also got to get away on our next P-Day and went to visit the Hassell's. We were able to go watch June play in her second T-ball game of the season. She's getting the hang of it! It was fun watching her and being able to spend time with the kids. We grabbed a bite to eat at Burley Burger with them before heading back to the mountain.

While we've been living in the mountains this month here's what the kids have been up to----
Nate and Diana ran in the Tiger/Claw Big Cat Run in Issadquha, WA. It was a 32 mile trail run. They both finished and have no regrets for spending the time together outdoor, out of the office.

Nate's also been doing some home improvement projects on their home. He's finding that owning a home takes effort and work that when done right pay-off. The construction skills he learned while in high school and college have been paying off.

The Mallory's have been busy with sports. Kennlyn's soccer team moved up to another rank. Langston and Mazin are also doing well in their leagues. I guess having their mom and dad help coach the teams is helping them excel.

Matt dressed up as Willy Wonka for a Charlie & the Chocolate Factory Kindness Day. What a fun counselor the Heritage Huskies have!! He was also rewarded with being the "Best Support Staff Member" for the 2025-2026 school year! What a caring counselor he is as well. Way to go Matt!!

The Mallory's have a pretty great missionary serving in Mexico as well ---- Quoting from some of Elder Mallory's letters- "We're seeing a lot of miracles. Our friend, Joushus is 10 and he is so hyped to get baptized. His whole family is inactive, and he is helping them pray every night. We went and visited them one day and his aunt was there who is also in-active. I asked him who he would like to pick to pray and he picked her. She said, Nooo... I haven't prayed in 3 years", but then she did it.
And she cried and the spirit was super strong. That kid is returning families to God."
In another letter he shared that they had a lot of people come to Church for their first time, and that a dad and his daughter will be getting baptized. The work is going forth!
We were also able to visit with him on the phone as well. He looks great and is doing great. This missionary gig is pretty awesome for both of us in different ways.

Andrew's been working the saw along the power line trails back east to keep the power company's happy, while Lindsay's been holding the house down with the kids getting out of school in the middle of the month. The swimming pool that's by them got finished, so that's helped them cool off some with temperatures in the 90's.

They've all been busy with end of school activities and sports. June's still doing her gymnastics, Lukes playing baseball and soccer and Zandra's trying to manage it all, while Garrett's working to provide for it all!
Luke celebrated his birthday with friends at Lagoon and Zandra celebrated her birthday with Garrett on a night out. Happy Birthday Luke and Zandra!! We love you!

Jason and Danica were invited to go to Mexico with Guild Mortgage due him being the Manager of the Layton Guild Mortgage team. Danica was able to go with him too. They both got in some sun, some classes to help Jason in his work and to relax. A win, win, for both. Looks like a nice time.

Danica and her friend Brooke ran in the Ogden marathon. June graduated from Pre-school and Jason & Danica took the kids to Bear Lake for a weekend and to Lagoon after they got home from their trip to Mexico. They all got in some magical times this month.

For us the mountain magic happens when we spend time outdoors. We were able to take a end of the month "buggy" ride to Bald Knoll and see a storm roll in, which was pretty amazing.
We also have seen moose and deer up close. We look for these tender mercies daily and hold them in our hearts.

Life is good!!
