June Jazz

I started out June still in San Diego with the Mallory's ...

On Day 4...  We ate our breakfast at the house, packed up a cooler for lunch, and headed out for a Speed Boat Adventure on the bay thanks to our Go City Passes. All the adults had a boat to drive. I had Kennlyn in with me. We saw a lot of seals out resting in the sun on the docks, and a lot of ships.

We ended up getting a really good up-close look at the ship "Midway" that was docked in the harbor. It was massive!!

It was fun, but we didn't go any faster than we could of in our boat pulling Dale water skiing. However, on the ocean it was a bit more bumpy at times.

We had our lunch in the parking lot where we would be boarding the Midway Ship to check it out, which was also on the Go City Pass. We had parked by the waters edge and as we ate lunch, we got to watch some guys lift one of the planes off of the top deck of the Midway and lower it onto a cargo barge with a crane. They were taking it to a place to have it have some refurbishing done on it. That was pretty cool to see.

Then we all climbed up the metal stairs to board The Midway ship. This ship played a big par in helping to stop an attack on the U.S. after Pearl Harbor happened. We watched a little movie about the story of the Midway and on our way out we saw an older gentleman standing by where we had gone in volunteering on the ship. I noticed his last name was Hansen and approached him and told him he had a good last name, because I was a Hansen as well. We chatted a bit and then I asked him if he had been a part of the crew on the Midway. We found out that he had been the gunner for some of the planes that were on the ship. He was only 19 when he was doing all of this too!

We had headphones that lead us on a self-guided tour of the ship and it was pretty cool seeing what it would have been like to be living on one. They had a Dr., Dentist, Barber, movie area, chapel for church, dining area, a little store, and a small bunk bed to sleep on. Basically it was a home of water for the soldiers, but the higher ranked guys had it a lot nicer! The hallways were small, and it was huge!! I could of easily gotten lost on it. It sure made you appreciate all our soldiers do to help us have our freedom.

Out on deck the ship had different types of aircraft or vehicles that they used.  Airplanes took off and landed on this ship while it was sailing in the ocean. It was pretty cool.

We stopped at the famous "Wars end" statue and got a few pictures and then headed back to the house and I cooked up some dinner for the kids while Matt and Amie went out to celebrate their 17th Anniversary. We played games and watched a movie. Matt and Amie had a nice dinner in the Coronado Beach area and spent some time on the beach.

Happy17th Anniversary Matt and Amie. Here's to many more!

Day 5: We got up early and after grabbing a bite to eat for breakfast, we headed out for a Whale and Dolphin Tour thanks to our Go City Pass. This didn't disappoint!! We got on the boat and headed to the upper deck. We saw some bottlenose dolphins and seals in the bay and as we got out more in the ocean we came upon a couple of Mola Mola fish (they are also known as Sun Fish because they are white and more flat). At first I thought it was just a white bag floating in the water, but we got closer and could see it better. Weird looking fish, huh.

The coolest part was when we came upon a pod of Common Dolphins (which are a darker color and a little smaller and not as slender), that started following the boat and swimming behind it and to the side of it. They kept by the boat for a while too. It was so neat watching them glide through the water. The highlight of the trip in my eyes (If you want to see some cool video footage check out either mine or Amie's Facebook post).

We ate lunch and then went to Lego Land, which was included with the Go City Pass. It was amazing to see pretty much everything made out of Legos. We went on a couple of roller coaster type rides as well. They also had an area that was full of different attractions from different states, like the White House, or the Vegas strip, or the Golden Gate bridge, all made out of Legos!  So cool.

We stopped for dinner on the way back to the house and shared how much we loved all we saw and did this day. It was such a fun day!!

Day 6: The San Diego Zoo was on the Go City Pass deal and so we took advantage of going there. The great thing about the zoo was that you didn't need to wear a mask if you had been vaccinated for COVID. It was a hot day, but we caught all we could see, from lions and tigers, and bears, to fish and polar bears, to birds. I liked seeing a Rhino up close, a Komodo Dragon, the gorillas, and Pandas. We sure walked a lot and saw a lot. We wore Maxin right out, he was asleep soon after we got back in the car.

After we'd seen all we could see we headed over to Old Town San Diego to go see the Mormon Battalion exhibit. The kids really thought that was pretty cool. It was too, in how it was done and what we learned as well as it was in an air conditioned place! The kids got to pan for gold and came home with a piece of fools gold  (small rocks painted gold).

We ate dinner in Old Town and headed back to the house.

Day 7: After breakfst we packed up the cooler again and headed out to see the Birch Aquarium at Scripps (a Go City Pass attraction). It was part of the Scripps Marine University and was pretty cool. We saw and touched some different aquatic animals as well. The grounds were beautiful and the building was way nice and clean.

Then we went to La Jolla Cove beach and saw some sea lions and rented kayaks and kayaked in the ocean (a Go City activity). It was hot out so it felt pretty good to get a little wet. Jaxson was the only one that got really wet because he fell out of the his kayak while he was trying to get out of it by the beach. Maybe he did it on purpose so he could cool off. Only Jaxson knows.

We went to La Jolla Beach and had a lunch and the kids got to play in the water and try out boogie boarding. It got a little chilly and windy, but that didn't stop us from having some fun.

For dinner we found a WAY YUMMY Thai Restaurant named Thai Gold, in the area. We all cleared our plates there. It was VERY tasty. It was so good the kids wanted to go eat their again the next day. The ride to the house was a bit quieter because the kids all fell asleep. A day full of fun accomplished in my eyes.

Day 8: The owners of the house we stayed at got home from their trip and we visited with them a bit before we headed out for our fun. Really nice people with a big heart.
We left to go to another Go City attraction, The Living Coast Discovery Center, where we saw some big sea turtles, and another big turtle and we got to pet Moray ells. We saw a big beautiful majestic bald eagle there too.

We tried to go to the beach again, but where it was a Saturday all the parking was gone. We  found a spot by LaJolla Cove, so we got out and checked that out for a bit, then we drove around for close to 3 hours to try to find a parking spot that would give us access to the beach, but to no avail.

For lunch we found a grassy spot and ate a late lunch. Then we decided to try one more area, Coronado Beach, where Amie and Matt went on their anniversary.
Luckily we found us a parking spot and got in some beach time, but not a lot because it was later in the day.

We were glad to end the day with a good experience. The waves were perfect for body surfing, and the kids got a hang of it. Even if the water got a bit chilly.
Again, it was a quiet ride back to the house. We had exhausted the kids.

Day 9: We packed up our bags and the cooler and headed to the last attraction we were going to use from the Go City Pass, San Diego's Safari Park. This was another one of my favorite places. I didn't need to wear a mask, and it was SO COOL!! The animals were more out in the open and not in cages. We saw lions, tigers, a cheetah, elephants, gorillas interacting with one another, a baby elephant, kangaroos, and cool birds and more.

It was hot, but it was worth it. We saw all we could more than once. We had a good little tour guide that enjoyed figuring out the map (thanks Mazin), and ate lunch in the park. To sum it up....we totally  enjoyed our last day in San Diego.

After we'd had enough we buckled up and headed to Barstow, CA where we got a bite to eat and checked into the hotel around 10:00pm. Then we hit the sack. Our feet needed a good rest (at least mine did).

Day 10:It was a long drive home, but we played car games and stopped for lunch and gas which broke it up a bit. We pulled into Cache Valley around 8:30pm.  Dale came and picked me up at Matt and Amie's. It was a trip full of fun packed days, but sleeping in your own bed is always a treat. Thanks Mallory's for letting me tag along!! I had a wonderful time.

We'd been home long enough for me to get the wash done and were off again. Dale loaded up the Razor and we met Andrew, Lindsay and their kids with their Razor in Franklin, ID and went up Cub River Canyon and found a spot to unload the machines. We buckled up and went for a ride in the mountains. We saw some pretty fields full of flowers, and got a glimpse of Bear Lake on top of a mountain. We ended up coming out in Fish Haven, and ended up getting a bite to eat at Zip's in Garden City before heading back over the mountain the way we came. We ended up getting back to the truck at dusk. It was a nice way to spend the evening. Thanks Andrew and Lindsay for the invite.

With it being so dry the fires season started early. There have been fires around Utah, but so far we haven't had any that have been real big. I sure hope it can stay that way, we need the water to use for our needs, not to put out fires!!

HYRUM — Fire fighters from multiple agencies were able to quickly contain a wildfire south of Hardware Ranch on Wednesday afternoon. The Ant Flat Fire was initially reported around 1:45 p.m. on Ant Flat Road near Hardware Peak Mountain Estates.

According to emergency radio traffic, as firefighters arrived on the scene, the blaze was estimated to be about five-acres in size and spreading moderately. Flames were reported to be threatening nearby structures.

Cache County Fire Marshal Jason Winn said the fire eventually grew to about 20-acres in size. Fire fighters were able to establish a perimeter around the blaze in about three hours.

Crews from Cache and Weber counties, along with the U.S. Forest Service worked together to get the fire contained quickly. They were helped by two helicopters and two Single Engine Airtankers (SEATs) from the Northern Utah Interagency Fire Center. They dropped water and retardant on hotspots, while brush crews cleared lines around the fire.

The fire is suspected to have been ignited by lightning from a storm that passed through the area around the time flames were reported.

Dale and I had some company stay over with us for a night. Danica joined up with some gals that had formed a Ragnar Sprint Team. Ragnar is a running race you do as a team. It started in Logan by Utah State, and ended at Snow Basin. Her team stayed at our house because they needed to check in at 5:30am. It was fun getting to know the gals and help out.

Danica was the second runner for their group and the exchange took place at Spring Creek Middle School in Providence. It was closer to Amie & Matt's house so they hopped on their bikes and met Danica to send her off by riding their bikes with her for as long as they could.

Dale and I went to her next exchange area in Eden and met Jason, Garrett, and Zandra with their kids. The team had a little set back at the Liberty exchange due to missing seeing their gal come past them. They were waiting and waiting and finally decided to go check at the exchange area and she was there waiting for them and had been for about a half hour or more! But the next gals did their best to try and make up the time. We had a sign we'd made with us so we held it up when she came in and then Garrett ran with Danica for a bit to help send her off on her last leg.

Then we all headed to the exchange area where Danica would be running in for the exchange and Dale, Garrett, and Jason went up the route a way to meet up with Danica and run in with her. It was pretty hot but she came in strong.

Garrett and Zandra had to get to a party so Dale and I went to their house to cool off and hang out until it was time to catch the team running in through the finish line. While we were waiting Dale helped Garrett trim some of his trees and bushes with the chain saw and I visited with Zandra and played with the kids.

We made it up to Snow Basin just in time to see gals run as a team across the finish line. Couldn't of asked for better timing! They made great time for their first time as a team and ended up running 67.3 miles in 7 hours. They came in 7th place out of 21 all women teams. If they hadn't of had that little "hiccup" they probably would have been 3rd or 4th. Maybe they'll try it again next year to see? Way to go team DEKKKM (Danica, Erin, Kendra, Kiah, Keli & Mik)!!

Our friends, Mike and Kathy Bullen, got us out into the big outdoors again by inviting us to go on a razor ride. This time we rode up Logan Canyon and got the machines off the trailer up by the LOMIA Girls Camp and then we rode them up to Ephraim's grave. A HUGE grizzly bear they call Old Ephraim who was also know as "Old Three Toes" by shepherds due to a deformity on one foot. He was a very large grizzly bear that roamed the Cache National Forest in Idaho and Utah from 1911 until his death on August 22, 1923. He had the same name as another grizzly bear in California described in a story by P.T. Barnum. Frank Clark, was the man who ended up killing Old Ephraim, and a memorial the size of the bear was put up in the area that shared his story.

As you can see from my face the ride was pretty dusty because it's been so dry. We need rain SO bad, but it was pretty and great to be in the mountains to smell that clean fresh mountain air.

For more fun, Andrew and Lindsay invited us to their house for a movie night. We watched a new movie out by Disney call "Luca" that was adorable. It was fun having the kids snuggled up at our side. Thanks for a fun evening guys!

Dale and I have both received callings in the ward. Dale's an Elder's Quorum teacher, and I'm to teach Gospel Doctrine (a calling I have NEVER done) and my first time teaching it was on Father's Day. We have a BIG ward with 538+ members and I was pretty nervous because I know of so many people who are way more qualified to teach Gospel Doctrine than I am. Well, I gave it what I had and made it through the lesson, but those in the class were great to help out with reading assignments and to make comments so it went pretty well, because of that. With the help of God and others I can do this. I know I'll definitely grow in this calling.

For Father's Day Andrew & Lindsay invited us over for dinner at their house the week before because Andrew would be leaving for his work tour to Georgia on Father's Day. We had a nice meal and played with the kids and visited.
Garrett and Zandra invited us to their house for dinner and fun on Father's Day. Zandra cooked up probably the best tasting salmon I've ever had and then the kids, Garrett, Dale and I went on a Razor ride in their backyard mountains. We had fun and saw what a beautiful area they live in.
We visited and played with the kids and then headed home. Thanks guys for a great day. We feel blessed to have the kids we do.

Dale and I hosted a neighborhood get-together at our house. We felt like it was WAY past due because we hadn't done one for the last two years due to a busy summer and then COVID and no lawn (Dale had sprayed KILLZ-ALL on the lawn instead of just weed killer). We ended up having 45-50 people here and we had a wonderful time. We provided the meat, rolls, drink, and paper goods and those that came provided the side dishes and dessert. People were here until 11:00pm visiting. It felt SO good being able to visit and catch up on everyone's comings and goings. We live in a great area.

Amie and Matt invited us to go kayaking around the marshes off of the Valley View Highway. It was the perfect way to cool off. We've had some pretty hot days this month. We saw some pelicans up close (I never realized how big they are), carp, pretty birds, and a beaver splashed his tail at us a couple of times because we must of been to close for his comfort. It was a nice out. To top it off we went out to eat at Firehouse Pizza and visited. Have I mentioned before that we have some pretty good kids?

The Church announced earlier in the month that masks were no longer necessary to wear at Church unless you felt you wanted to and that our Temple would be moving to Phase 3, which means that more people can attend sealings, and that with an appointment, initiatory, and endowment sessions will resume. With that happening Dale and I were able to attend the sealing of Dale's niece, Hallie Hansen. It felt SO good to be back in the Temple!! Oh, how I've missed going there! The brother who sealed them did a beautiful job on explaining all that is needed that leads to being sealed in the temple and the covenants needed. The spirit was strongly felt in the room. Hallie and Cade both said they felt their loved ones pass through the veil (grandparents) and join them in spirit. It was  beautiful day.

They had a nice catered dinner at the Nibley Civic Center, and then later we went to their reception that was in Bryan and Stephanie's backyard. It was SO pretty! Looked like it could of come out of a magazine. I wish the new Mr. & Mrs. Findlay well on their new journey.

Dale was a sport and pulled our trailer over the mountain to Blue Water by Bear Lake. We got all settled, went to dinner at Old Ephraim's Restaurant, played some games and slept in the trailer together for a night. The next day we went to Church in Garden City (which had 685 people in attendance) and then looked at house plans (dreaming) and cooked up some dinner for my Golden Gals that were coming.
After we all ate, Dale left. The gals and I and stayed for three more days. We visited, played games, ate, played games, went swimming in the pool, visited, spent time on the beach, went kayaking, and played more games, did more visiting and eating.
We also went to Pickleville Playhouse and saw the show "Peter Pan". It was very entertaining and very well done.
We saw some pretty awesome sunsets on the beach as well. I feel SO blessed having these ladies in my life. Thanks Kathy and Jeanette for the memories and good times.

I ended up staying a night alone in the trailer because the next group coming wasn't until the next evening. It was good though, I went on a walk, and watched a movie, and did some catching up on things I needed to do on my laptop. When we got to Blue Water it was packed, then it emptied out more during the week, but I'm sure with the July 4th holiday coming up it will be packed again.

While I was at Bear Lake with the gals I got this notice on my phone about the water situation in Hyde Park......

Then two days later I got this notice on my phone.....

I sure hope that we can have enough water throughout the summer! We've had a lot of new homes that have gone in and are still going in around us, and the new water tank isn't done yet. We need rain!!

With Nate being laid up a bit and non-weight bearing on his leg, he's still been able to get out. He's gotten into sailing and bird watching with Diana. He's also slowly started to wean himself off of the boot and is starting to do some running. I hope he's smart and doesn't end up in a boot again. Time will tell.

The Mallory's kicked off summer by having Jaxson participate in the USU Basketball Camp. It doesn't hurt to work to improve those skills. Way to go Jaxson.

He also went to a high school basketball camp with the Ridgeline sophomore team. The were undefeated during the camp. Way to go guys!

Matt and Amie went with Jaxson and Kennlyn and did baptisms for the dead now that the temple is open for baptisms and own endowments. They all agreed it was good to be back in the temple after such a long break with it being closed. The temple just holds a special peace about it.

Mazin is quite the over achiever, not only did he graduate from pre-school last month, he graduated from the Upstart online pre-school he was doing during the school year this month. Way to go Mazin!

The Mallory's have gone out water skiing with Andrew a few times and with Dale a few times. All are improving and we even got Langston up on two skis, Kennlyn skiing on one, and Matt dropping one and skiing. Awesome!!

                                                              Matt skiing on one ski
                                   Amie skiing                                            Kennlyn skiing

Mazin helping Andrew drive the boat
Langston and Titan skiing with the ski boon
Langston gets up on skis without the boon!

Langston's been improving in baseball, and with the hot days of summer Langston and Mazin teamed up with some friends and sold lemonade. They made around  a $100 dollars while doing it. Here come the next family entrepreneurs of the family.

They also took swimming lessons again this summer. They may have some kids on the swim team as well.

Andrew and Lindsay have had the bug to buy a bigger lot and have had their eye on some land in Richmond not too far from where they currently live. Well, they bought 2 acres and then ended up selling an acre. With the way the economy is, building is booming. This will give them more space so the neighbors aren't on top of them. It sounds like they should start digging next month. Fun times ahead for them!

They also celebrated their 11th anniversary and to have some alone time they got a babysitter and spent the day at Lagoon. It got a bit chilly and they had some rain  but they didn't let them stop the fun. After they had enough they went to dinner. Happy Anniversary Andrew and Lindsay,  you two love birds!!

They've gone out boating, swimming at the local Aquatic Center, and enjoyed the outdoors in the mountains to stay cool and have some family fun.

Zandra got in a biking trip with some of her friends that she has been biking with. They went to Moab and enjoyed the sights on their bikes. Zandra said "the outdoors are a lot prettier than seeing it through a car window". It sounded like they had a good time.

For Father's Day weekend Garrett and the kids went fishing at Pineview Reservoir and they caught a fish!! A rewarding way to spend time with Dad, right?

Zandra and Garrett finally got out and tried out the mountain bike Zandra got for her birthday last month. I kind of think she likes it.

Danica and Jason continued filling up their days with work and fun. As was mentioned last month they took a trip to Cabo with friends for more fun in the sun. They finished up their fun earlier this month.

Because Jason and Danica are avid Jazz fans here's the up-date on their happenings... The Jazz lost to the LA Clippers by only winning two out of six games, winning once at home and once in California. This made it so the Jazz wouldn't be playing in the NBA play-off tournament. Sad deal for Utah Jazz fans.

For Father's Day they went with Jason's dad to San Diego to watch some of the US Open Golf tournament. They got to see some big name golfers: Phil Mickelson, Tony Finau, Brooks Koeoka (Danica's crush on the golf circuit) and Jon Rahm (the winner of the tournament). They also saw Steph Curry who plays basketball for the Golden State Warriors up close and he waved and smiled at her when she called his name out. Jason was even able to talk to a few of the guys. They were in heaven I'm sure. What a fun trip all of them.

From San Diego they headed to Lake Powell to spend time with Jason's mon's side of the family, the Kapp's . They go every year and have a blast. The water is WAY low at Lake Powell due to the drought conditions in the area, but they were able to get the boat in and have a fun time with family.

When they finally got home, I'm sure their own bed and some down time felt good, but work was waiting. You've got to be able to pay for the fun, right?

In the news for the Church not only did a lot of the temples move to a Phase 3, but the Provo Missionary Center returned to in person training for those that have been called on missions to foreign countries. During COVID those missionaries going to foreign areas had to learn via virtual on-line learning and live at home while following the mission rules. I'm sure a lot of parents, families, and recently called missionaries are very grateful for this happening.

Also with it being so dry and with a scare on water shortages the Governor is strongly asking all Utah residents to skip using personal fireworks during the July holiday weekend. He also asked that we cut back to only watering our lawns twice a week to give the farmers the water needed for crops and their cattle.

I know for us, next month we'll be celebrating the 4th at Bear Lake and they are putting on a show, so we'll celebrate with fireworks that way. I hope we can't be using precious water we have to be putting out man-made fires. Our farmers need the water for their crops, and we need it for our gardens, yard, and personal use.

We did end the month with a small fire that started south of Hardware Ranch, but luckily it got put out rather quickly.

The County Fire Marshal had this to say:

“We’re a little nervous. Usually, our fire season up in Cache Valley really doesn’t start until the end of July, first of August,” Winn explained. “But this year, it’s starting quite early, so every day you wake up and you wonder what’s going to happen today.

Winn said everyone needs to remember that the state has put a ban of fireworks in the unincorporated, private and state lands, so anything out of city limits is off limits. Cache County has released a map with the restrictions in each city in the county.  He said if people do shoot off fireworks legally they need to remember the 4 B’s.

Be prepared, be responsible, be safe and be aware. And so just be prepared- always have water handy with you, have a garden hose, and make sure you have buckets of water just in case something happens.”

Here's this months info. on the COVID happenings in our area --

The Utah Department of Health reported the 110th coronavirus death of a resident living in the Bear River Health District, a Box Elder County woman between 25 and 44 years of age who was hospitalized at the time of death.

She was one of three COVID deaths in Utah since Monday and now 2,368 Utahns have lost their lives to the virus during the pandemic.
There have been 414,565 positive coronavirus cases the last 15 months, including 361 reported Tuesday which is three fewer than the current seven-day average of new cases.

The number of fully immunized people in the Bear River Health District is 51.9 percent (67,507 people). That includes 54.4 percent in Cache County, 46.5 percent in Box Elder County and 47.2 percent in Rich County. A total of 144,395 doses have been administered in northern Utah.
Utah is on the verge of 1.4 million fully vaccinated citizens (the actual number is 1,399,374) and over the course of the pandemic 2.85 million vaccines have been administered statewide. That represents 54 percent of all Utahns 12 and older who are eligible for vaccination. Also, over 1.57 million Utahns have received at least one dose
Recently there has been a spike in new hospitalizations caused by the COVID-19 virus. Statewide hospitalizations Tuesday grew from 220 to 225. There are 79 Utahns in intensive care, which is seven more than Monday. Since the start of the outbreak 17,481 Utahns have been hospitalized.
Tuesday the rolling seven-day average for percent positivity of “people over people” grew to 9.7 percent from 9.6 percent and in the rolling seven-day average for percent positivity of “tests over tests,” remained at 6.4 percent.

So there you have it -- all that Jazz for June
