Joyful July

July always starts out with a bang in our area because with the festivities from the 4th of July. Our town, Logan, puts on a great fireworks show. This year it didn't disappoint.
We joined up with my brother, Danny, and his wife, Terry, Jason and Danica for dinner at Firehouse Pizza and then we all went to USU's Maverick Stadium and met up with the Mallory clan (as well as Matt's family) to watch the fireworks and program. They had great music and we were in good company. Happy Birthday America! Let Freedom Ring!

During the show it got a little windy. We found some of the casing coverings in the stadium after. They look like bomb shell casings!! I guess in a way they are.

Danica and Jason stayed the night with us and in the morning after one of Dale's famous breakfast of pancakes, bacon and eggs, we drove up Providence Canyon and took a short hike up to a waterfall. We never even knew this place was around in all the years we've lived in the valley! You learn something new every day. Thanks Danica for finding this hidden gem.

Isn't it amazing how trees can grow in rocks!!

After the hike, Jason and Danica left to go to Bear Lake for the Hassell Reunion, so after we got some lunch, Dale and I hopped on his motorcycle and took a little ride through Preston, ID, and up around Emmigration Canyon (which was way pretty), through Paris, ID, (which I didn't even know had a main street with stores) and through Bear Lake, and Logan Canyon. We got caught in a little rain storm around the Bear Lake area so we stopped and had dinner at Merlin's to wait for the storm to pass. The ride through Logan Canyon was pretty as well. We sure live in a beautiful area. Thank God I'm American, and live in the land of the free!!

We got home in time to clean up and then headed over to Andrew and Lindsay's for dinner and to do fireworks with the kids. Arwyn, Nora and I climbed in the back of the Subaru and watched from inside the car because they didn't like the loud noises. It was cute seeing how excited they got watching them.  Happy Independence Day!!

The Utah Festival Opera Season started up at the Eccles and I ushered for: The Marriage of Figaro, West Side Story (one of my favorites), The Pianists (where all of the piano players put on a concert), Newsies (another favorite), and Mary Poppins. It was a good season and I love meeting, and visiting with the patrons that come to the shows.

Dale was given tickets to the UFO's Gala event at the Riverwoods Event Center. We had a nice dinner, and got to hear some of the musicians preform some songs and then we went and saw Mary Poppins at the Eccles. Talk about wine and dine. It was a very nice evening for both of us.

The Hadfield Reunion (mom's family) is still going strong with my Uncle Max being the lone survivor from the Hadfield tribe. His wife, Marie, and my Uncle Allen Bastow (who married my Aunt Nina, mom's sister) are all that's still around to represent a tie to the original ten children of William and Grace.
My Uncle Dean's family was in charge and they did a great job hosting "The Greatest Family on Earth". It's always great to visit with family.

Dale and I celebrated our wedding anniversary by going to the Logan Temple and doing what we did 38 years ago on July 17, 1981 (Except this time it was doing work for those who have passed away).

We went to dinner after at The Bluebird Restaurant. We've gone through a lot together in 38 years, and are still going strong, and looking forward to many more years ahead together.

I was able to serve in the Youth Center at the Temple two different times this month. Once when a 6 month old little boy was sealed to his parents, and at that sealing I realized that I was helping in the Youth Center when his 3 yr. old sister was a baby and sealed to her parents. Pretty neat!
The other time I helped with a 7 month old baby that had been adopted from the Marshall Islands that had a 4 yr. old sister. Both were very touching and such cute kids. What a blessing the gospel brings in knowing that you can have the opportunity to be with your family forever.

I was also able to help The Friends of the North Logan Library out with another book sorting event they held at Jenson's Books. We sorted through books that that Jenson's didn't have a need for anymore so we could sell them in the Book Buggy at different events around the valley to raise money for the library.

We got our trailer last month, so we loaded up the new trailer and broke it in by  taking it over to Blue Water Beach Resort by Bear Lake. Dale and I hung out for a day with friends, Kathy Fishburn and Mike Bullen. Mike brought his boat over to the lake.  I got in a ride on the tube, then Dale skied and tubed. I tried to get Mike to give Dale a ride like he gives us when we're on the tube; a fast, bumpy, hang on for your life type of ride, but he only got a "little feel" I think. He did do a barrel roll though and hung on. Pretty impressive! We had lunch, and played cards while on the boat, went over to the North Shore and sawm in the warmer water and just relaxed. The water wasn't as cold as it was when we were there last month, but still chilly. Mike and Kathy treated us pretty good for the day.

Andrew and Lindsay loaded up the kids and joined us for a few days around the 24th holiday. We played lawn games, visited, checked out the ice caves in Paris, ID (which were pretty cool and I had never been to), went swimming in the pool, hit the beach at sunset, found some reminders of God's love with heart shaped leaves with help from Eloise, ate at Zip's, and even took the boat out for the day.

The Mallory's joined us for the boating day at the lake, and Andrew, and Dale got to ski and then Jaxson, and his friend, Amie, and Mazin, and Eloise and Andrew and Elosie tubed. We had the kayaks out as well and believe it or not, the water was pretty warm where we were for Bear Lake. We all got a little color and had a lot of fun.

It was a great way to break in the trailer, and get the boat out. We had temps get into the mid 90's. The perfect way to enjoy a hot day.

I came home with some type of a bug bite that didn't like me. It was pretty sore for a few days, but after treating it with Tea Tree oil (a recommendation from a friend), it calmed down and healed.
The bugs seem to like me!

At the end of the month, to get us into the spirit of our Petersen/Hansen Reunion next month, Dale and I went to the Brigham City Temple (because the Logan Temple was closed for cleaning) with Matt and Amie and did temple sealings for names we had found from the Hadfield, Petersen, and Hansen families. Thanks guys for joining us.

Nate's weekend adventures took him to the Boston Basin in the North Cascades National Park. He went hiking and climbing in the Mount Torment area to the Forbidden Traverse. He said it was "one of the most beautiful areas he has ever climbed".

He also traveled back to where he learned to love trail running, climbing, and back country skiing. He had a conference in Park City and couldn't pass up the opportunity to get back on the Wasatch Mountains by going on a trail run up to Mt. Superior above Snowbird Resort.

He also took advantage of Danica's offer to have the Dentist that she works for, do a dental check-up, any work needed, and a teeth cleaning. It was a win, win, trip--he got to see his little sis, got a pretty good family discount, and still got in a trail run, and the conference in the two days he was in Utah. Too bad we couldn't catch up with him for a visit, but Utah treated him well.

Nate had a cool experience happen in the operating room -- this is what he wrote on his Instagram post: "10 years ago I decided to go back to school to become a physician after working as an engineer. Things came back full circle recently when I was able to use a device that I was the designer on, and have a patent on, in surgery, as a surgeon. This tool was originally designed for use in the shoulder, but it worked exceptionally well for the ankle joint. This tool is called the Anthrex/PoweRasp". What a neat experience for him to use a tool he designed for surgery, huh?

The last weekend of July he joined up with some buddies and ran in the White River 50 mile race that took place in the Mt. Rainer National Forest area. It looked like they were on a beautiful trail at times.

They all finished and could still walk straight. Nate made good time, he ran it in 10:07. Who's kid is this? It would of taken me a few weeks!!

The Mallory's kicked off July with a bang by hosting the Mallory Reunion and making their place the hub of the activities. They kicked it off by attending Logan's Freedom of Fire Show, then fit in a hike up Providence Canyon, the Hyrum, UT 4th of July parade, went to the Ogden Raptors baseball game, a hike above Mendon, UT, did Backyard games and relays, went kayaking at 1st Dam, and played Laser Tag in the halls of Cedar Ridge Elementary (Matt has an in).  There was something fun for everyone.

Matt celebrated his birthday with family and friends. One year older and wiser too, Happy Birthday to you!!

Jaxson got his Service Project done for scouts. He trimmed the trees at Heritage Elementary with his dad's tree timming skills. He's getting closer to recieving his Eagle. Great job Jaxson (and Matt).

Matt went to a tree trimming class to learn the right way to do it. He's put his knowledge to work in getting their yard all shaped up.

Kennlyn and Langston finished up their softball and baseball summer season. Both are getting the hang of the game and loving it.

Jaxson went to the USU basketball camp and also to a 3 on 3 basketball tournament in Oakley, ID and played with his buddies from when they lived there.

The Mallory's joined up with the Hassell's and went to an Ogden Raptors game with them. Mazin ended up getting a foul ball, thanks to the kind man that caught it.

Andrew and Lindsay found out that Nora has Cerebral Palsy (a form called Septo-optic Displasia, where her brain doesn't have a Septum Pellucidum). The Doctor thinks that they can help her with medication, and surgery. With Nora's strong willed attitude though she's not going to let that stop her. What a trooper she is. We sure love our Nora Bug!

Titan turned 8 this month! Happy Birthday Titan, it's a big one for you!!

He chose to be baptized and confirmed a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Richmond, UT Stake Center church building.

We gathered for a lunch at Andrew and Lindsay's with the Olsen's to celebrate and visit.

Andrew and Titan got busy and put up the swing set/play area they bought for the backyard. This kids love it!

Garrett and Zandra had a lot of company come this month. They had Rehnu, from India visit, as well as Zandra's folks. They made the most of it by keeping busy -- going to the Park with the kids, going to the Kaysville 4th of July parade (which featured old VW's. Pretty cool, huh?), cookouts, playing in the backyard, and to the Hogle Zoo. Some fun for all.

Garrett got his bike out and went on a ride up on trails around Snow Basin again this month. I think he likes his new bike, what do you think?

Danica and Jason made the most of family time. After spending the 4th with us they went to Bear Lake with his dad's side of the family. They got in some golf, fun on the beach, good food, and made memories with the Hassell's.

Then they got in some more fun in the sun by going to a family reunion on his mom's side with the Kapp family to Lake Powell. Memories were made there as well.

Ode to the joyful memories of summer in July made by all!!
